The Reality for Black and Underrepresented Ethnic Groups in the Corporate World
If you’re navigating the corporate landscape as someone who identifies as Black or from an underrepresented ethnic group, you’re likely juggling more than just the usual workplace challenges.
Beyond adapting to AI disruptions, economic volatility, and hybrid working across time zones, you’re also contending with systemic barriers that can make career progression feel like an uphill battle.

Like your colleagues you too are also:
- Taking on senior responsibilities like P&L ownership or leading teams without formal training or support.
- Burning out from years of being overlooked, undervalued, or feeling the need to overperform to prove your worth.
- Transitioning from an individual contributor roles to management, but without a clear career pathway map or allies to support your next move.
- Feeling stalled in your career progression despite your talent, commitment, and track record.
And while everyone faces tough market conditions, political dynamics at work, painful career transitions you’re also pushing through unique and persistent challenges that are largely invisible to those around you.
Here are some of the common headwinds often holding people of colour back:
Facing the Headwinds: Challenges That Hold Black and Underrepresented Ethnic Professionals Back
Lack of Representation at the Top
With few leaders who share your background, finding mentorship and inspiration can be challenging, leading to feelings of isolation.
Despite decades of discussion, progress is slow.
According to the Parker Review (2024), just 13% of board members in the FTSE 250 identify as being from an ethnic minority background, and fewer than 5% of CEOs do. Representation at executive levels is even lower for Black professionals.
Out of the top 500 companies in America, only 8 have Black CEOs.
This represents just 1.6% of Fortune 500 leadership but is the the highest number in history to date, despite Black Americans making up 13% of the U.S. labour force.

You might recognise unhelpful internal narratives like:
- “They only want me in leadership to tick diversity boxes. I’m not bothering.”
- “Senior leadership isn’t for people like us.”
- “I have to work twice as hard to be seen as equal.”
- “Networking feels inauthentic; I’d rather do it alone.”
The constant emotional toll of code-switching, self-censorship, and overperformance to meet unspoken standards takes a serious toll, fuelling stress, anxiety, and burnout.
This isn’t just a theory. Research* shows Black Caribbean men and women experience poorer health outcomes, mirroring those of White British peers a decade older. A direct result of chronic exposure to inequality.
The economic cost is significant too. A government report** reports that the UK loses an estimated £24 billion annually. 1.3% of GDP by failing to fully include ethnically diverse talent in the workforce.
